Artist Profiles

CORA ROTH
Swanee - 2004
oil, acrylic on canvas
30 x 74 inches (76.2 x 187.96 cm)

Cora Roth - “Tapestries of Circumstance”
The title of the exhibition was taken from a fragment of Wislawa Szymborskas' poem "No Title Required". The poets phrase "The tapestry of circumstance is intricate and dense" relates to the highly detailed structure of the paintings. These paintings were created with individual brushstrokes coalescing into tactile, unified fields of paint. Light-catching glitter dapples the acrylic underpaintings beneath the thickly oil-painted surfaces. Line and form as well as color contribute to rhythmic, tonal, harmonious chords, suggesting a wide emotional range in which viewers may seek their own associations and experiences.

STEVE TOBIN
Untitled
mixed media on canvas

Steve Tobin - Steve Tobin’s mixed media paintings are comprised of countless machine-made found objects. The individual items are scraped, sanded and painted to be transformed into a natural abstract scene like the forest floor, or a planets surface. The mass quantity of the objects embedded in black, white, yellow and rust paint present an illusion of continuous movement in the overall random pattern of the works.

ELAINE SPATZ-RABINOWITZ
Storm - 2006
Mixed Media
25 x 29 x 3 in (63.5 x 73.7 x 7.6 cm)

Elaine Spatz-Rabinowitz - Elaine Spatz-Rabinowitz continues to work on issues of social and environmental breakdown and class division, using her signature technique of painting small crisp details in oil on cast plaster surfaces. Her casting technique includes pigment in various forms, debris, rusty wires, and other bits of found objects. In her work, the aggressive physicality of plaster unites with the delicacy of illusionist painting.

KEN MORGAN
Outside Act - 2000
mixed media on canvas on board
24 x 30 inches (60.96 x 76.2 cm)

Ken Morgan - An homage to his family's history as circus performers, Ken Morgan’s mixed media paintings and drawings evoke comparisons to diagrams of such performances. The drawings and paintings have a childlike directness in their linear quality and at the same time are sophisticated in the placement of shape and color.

GABRIELLE SENZA
Untitled Dialogue, V (Search) - 2003
oil and graphite on paper on panel
12 x 10 inches (30.48 x 25.4 cm)

Gabrielle Senza - Gabriel Senza’s new works are small, apparently extemporaneous musings on line and form. The group of oils on wood panels reflects a meandering, fluid, purely abstract sensibility while simultaneously suggesting vague and hidden forms and meaning. Each gesture seems to be a thought captured in the moment when it first occurs and then frozen for us to examine and ponder.
